Schiller's Pin

Media_httpwwwanomalie_jfdou

Convicted forger A. Schiller was serving his time in Sing Sing prison in the late 1800s when guards found him dead in his cell. On his body they found seven regular straight pins whose heads measured the typical 47/1000ths of an inch or 1.17 millimeters in diameter.

Under 500 magnification it was found that the tiny etchings seen on the heads of the pins were the words to the Lord's Prayer, which is 65 words and 254 letters long. Of the seven pins, six were silver and one
was gold -- the gold pin's prayer was flawless and a true masterpiece.

Schiller had spent the last twenty five years of his life creating the pins, using a tool too small to be seen by the naked eye. It is estimated that it took 1,863 separate carving strokes to make the gold pin. Schiller went blind because of his artwork.

Art vs. Porn

Media_httpfarm4static_foczd

We decided to try out a new Mexican restaurant in town. After being seated, I drew her attention to a cast metal picture of a shirtless Mayan warrior carrying a nude woman.

"Hey, check out the porn on the wall."

"It's not porn," she said. "It's art."

"What? There's metal boobs right there, what makes it art and not porn?" I asked.

"If you can add a naked midget and it doesn't seem completely out of place, it's porn. If there was a naked midget standing behind them, what would you say?"

"Probably something along the lines of, What the fuck, why is there a naked midget?"

"Then it's art."

Cop beating child Jesus too much for church

Media_httpfarm5static_ezeep

The elders at Ecclesia Church in Houston TX were expecting something tame from Jackson Potts II for their annual Stations of the Cross art display. Instead, the 10-year-old produced a photo of his screaming kid brother Dietrich being beaten by a police officer. Jackson says it is a modern-day interpretation of Roman soldiers beating Jesus.

Jackson, who was tasked with depicting Jesus falling for a second time under the weight of his cross, batted around ideas for weeks. He settled on covering Dietrich with fake blood and posing him with an adult friend wearing a police officer's uniform. “It is the innocence of Jesus as a child,” Jackson said. “And a policeman is like a Roman guard.”

Jackson and his father, also a photographer, are holding out hope the church will allow the photo to hang during the city's FotoFest, a biannual photography celebration that runs until the end of April. The church agreed to display it during a reception on 12 March 2010 and put it on the gallery's web site. "I just want them to display it," Jackson said.
