Tough love against bullying

Media_httphooverlawco_iafhr

A father marched his two children to a police station to have them charged with assault after catching them attacking another teen. The father was so enraged with his kids that he sold his 17-year-old son's car and 15-year-old daughter's horse as further punishment.

The pair admitted to picking on their bullying victim because he wore glasses, the same reason their father said he was bullied as a child. The father said following the assault, which left the victim with a broken jaw, his two children would face court next month.

Two bull sharks have been spotted swimming past the McDonald’s restaurant in Goodna, a suburb of the Australian city of Ipswich in flood-ridden Queensland. Goodna butcher Steve Bateman saw one of the sharks swimming through the flooded waters of Williams Street near his butcher’s shop in the St Ives shopping centre yesterday. There were several reports of another shark spotted on Queen Street, Goodna's main street. "It’s definitely a first for Goodna, to have a shark in the main street," said Ipswich councillor Paul Tully.

Over half your news is spin

A study of ten mainstream newspapers in Australia found that nearly 55% of stories were driven by some form of public relations. The Daily Telegraph came out on top of the league ladder with 70% of stories triggered by PR entities. The Sydney Morning Herald had 42% PR-driven stories in the period.

Many journalists and editors were defensive when asked about the results. Who would blame them? They are busier than ever, under resourced, on deadline, and under pressure. Most refused to respond, others asked for their comments to be withdrawn out of fear they would be reprimanded or fired.

Teen arrested for listening to "offensive" music

A teen has been arrested in Australia for listening to what police have deemed offensive rap music. 19-year-old Nathan Michael Wilkie faces a charge of offensive behaviour after police arrested him when he was listening to music by rapper Kid Selzy on his car stereo.

Mr Wilkie was parked outside a supermarket, waiting for his mother, when he was arrested. The court heard he was listening to lyrics such as "shut your fucking mouth bitch, fucking motherfucker". The arresting officers found the music offensive and derogatory to females.

Mr Wilkie allegedly told officers: "You're a joke, go do some real police work."
