The Earth Is Full

"We will realize that the consumer-driven growth model is broken and we have to move to a more happiness-driven growth model, based on people working less and owning less," Paul Gilding, Australian environmentalist-entrepreneur, says. "How many people," Gilding asks, "lie on their death bed and say, I wish I had worked harder or built more shareholder value, and how many say, I wish I had gone to more ballgames, read more books to my kids, taken more walks? To do that, you need a growth model based on giving people more time to enjoy life, but with less stuff."

Strange Quark Strike

A group of researchers identified two seismic events that they think provide the first evidence of a previously undetected form of matter passing through the Earth. The so-called strange quark matter is so dense that a piece the size of a human cell would weigh a tonne.

In 1993, the group of scientists at the Southern Methodist University in the US began looking for such events. "We cannot prove that this was strange quark matter, but that is the only explanation that has been offered so far," said seismologist, late Professor Eugene Herrin.

One event occurred on 22 October 1993, when something entered the Earth off Antarctica and left it south of India 0.73 of a second later. The other occurred on 24 November 1993, when an object entered south of Australia and exited near Antarctica 0.15 of a second later.
