Europeans Against Multiculturalism

Media_httppetasokuinf_zcjzi

One of the many signs of the rightward creep of Western European politics is the recent unison of voices denouncing multiculturalism. German Chancellor Angela Merkel led off last October by claiming that multiculturalism “has failed and failed utterly.” She was echoed in February by French President Nicolas Sarkozy and British Prime Minister David Cameron. All three were late to the game, though: for years, the Dutch far right has been bashing supposedly multicultural policies.

Chechens in Finland Against Hate Speech

Media_httpimgs2kavkaz_rjwrx

Around 30 members of the Chechen diaspora in Finland held a peaceful demonstration outside the Lutheran church in the town of Raasepori on 31 October 2010. The demonstrators wanted to turn the attention of the parishioners to the threats and malicious statements of pastor Juha Molari against Chechen refugees in Finland. The demonstrators handed out leaflets informing the parishioners about Molari's documented statements and carried placards saying, "We are not terrorists", "Why does this pastor persecute us?", and "Molari's hate group persecutes refugees".

Several months ago, a state-funded school in an illegal Israeli settlement in the West Bank was fined for segregating white Jewish students from non-white Jewish students. Now, the Israeli education ministry has agreed with the white parents' request to allow the school to continue its racial discrimination under private funding. Israeli law does not ban racial discrimination by private organizations, even schools. A court interpreted these laws to also apply to illegal settlements, which are located in areas supposedly under Palestinian control. The Palestinian Authority does not allow racial discrimination, but due to the Israeli military occupation, it has no authority over the area.

Girl shaves head to be readmitted to school

15-year-old Cennet Doğanay was banned from classes for wearing a headscarf, as it went against the new French law banning religious signs in schools. She was only allowed into school after shaving her head. Cennet's mother said her daughter had tried everything: "a beret, a bandana, but they still refused to let her into class." Cennet told journalists: "I respect the law but the law does not respect me."

X-ray that A-rab!

The Finnish airport operator, Finavia, may begin scanning travellers based on their religion or nationality. Speaking in an interview with Sunnuntaisuomalainen, Finavia security chief Jyri Vikström said the company may start profiling passengers if Finnish airports begin using body scanners. The profiling would look at people's behaviour at the airport, but also at their religion and nationality. Mr Vikström did not see profiling as an equality issue. However, Finavia later said in a brief statement that the company had no guidelines in place for selecting people to be body scanned based on nationality or religion.

Israel is an apartheid state

One of the myths among whites in South Africa was that “blacks want to throw us into the sea.” Many of apartheid’s practices were formally based on security, mostly those involving restrictions on movement. Thus, for example, black citizens needed permits to move around the country. During the final years of apartheid, its practices became more severe.

In Israel, institutional discrimination is meant to preserve the supremacy of a group of Jewish settlers over Palestinian Arabs. As far as discriminatory practices are concerned, it is hard to find differences between white rule in South Africa and Israeli rule in the territories; for example, separate areas and separate laws for Jews and Palestinians.
