The Danish non-profit endeavour, Copenhagen Suborbitals, has a mission: to launch a human being into space. The group, led by Kristian von Bengtson and Peter Madsen, is based entirely on sponsors and volunteers. The group is operating from an abandoned shipyard in the outskirts of Copenhagen.

Copenhagen Suborbitals is developing two rocket vehicles: a small unmanned sounding rocket, named Hybrid Atmospheric Test Vehicle (HATV), and a larger booster rocket, named Hybrid Exo Atmospheric Transporter (HEAT), designed to carry a micro spacecraft (MSC) into a suborbital trajectory in space.

HEAT is due to carry MSC Tycho Brahe into space. The spacecraft will carry one upright standing or half-sitting person. The tychonaut, Peter Madsen, will have a full view through a polymer plexiglass dome. A test launch is scheduled in seven days. The test area is at sea 20 miles from the east coast of Bornholm.

Says one of the project's participants: "In this frozen socialist deathpanel utopia, we have tamed the red tape jungle and managed to attain a degree of freedom that seems ideal for what is basically an elaborate art project with no solid business plan." You can read more about the project (in Danish) at Ingeniøren.

The commenters on the project's forum thread over at The Something Awful are in awe: "This is one of the top 5 accomplishments of the human species: Apollo 11, the Pyramids, the Chunnel, Angkor Wat, and this." You can support the project by donating through Copenhagen Suborbitals.
